PV=nRT,\qquad R=0.0821\,\mathrm{atm\cdot L/(mol\cdot K)}
P=P_0+\frac{mg}{A}

What am I looking at?
A cylinder of constant cross-section holds n=0.100\,\mathrm{mol} of an ideal gas. Its state is described by the pressure P, the volume V and the absolute temperature T, which always satisfy the ideal gas law.
PV=nRT,\qquad R=0.0821\,\mathrm{atm\cdot L/(mol\cdot K)}
Each experiment holds one quantity constant (controlled variable), changes another (manipulated variable) and shows how the third one responds (dependent variable). Changes are assumed slow enough that the gas is always in equilibrium, so a new value immediately shows the new equilibrium state.
| Experiment | Held | Changed | Responds | How it is held |
|---|
| Boyle | T | V | P | The cylinder sits in a large constant-temperature bath. |
| Charles | P | T | V | A weight rests on a free piston. |
| Gay-Lussac | V | T | P | Pins fix the piston. |
In the Charles experiment the gas pressure is the outside air pressure 1\,\mathrm{atm} plus the weight divided by the piston area (piston mass and friction are ignored), so at P=1\,\mathrm{atm} there is no weight. The piston is free, so it stops where the push of the air and weight from outside equals the push of the gas from inside. The gas pressure is therefore always given by the equation below; changing the temperature leaves the air pressure P_0, the weight’s mass m and the piston area A unchanged, so the pressure stays the same and only the piston moves.
P=P_0+\frac{mg}{A}
In the drawing, equal red arrows above and below the piston show this balance, and the same equation is written above the cylinder. The teal index on the gauge marks the pressure you set; the needle stays on it whatever the temperature.
Reading the screen
The apparatus is on the left: the scale on the cylinder gives the volume (L), the gauge on the right the pressure (atm) and the thermometer on the left the temperature (K). Boyle’s experiment shows the bath; the other two show a temperature plate under the cylinder, red when heating above 300\,\mathrm{K} and blue when cooling below it.
The graph is on the right. The teal curve is the ideal gas law at the present value of the controlled variable, labelled at its end. It is solid where the manipulated variable is inside the experimental range and dotted where the law is extended beyond it. The amber dot is the present state; numbered violet dots are recorded states. Records taken at other values of the controlled variable keep their own faint curve for comparison. The switch above the graph chooses P\text{–}V or P\text{–}\frac{1}{V} for Boyle, and absolute temperature T (K) or Celsius temperature t (°C) for the other two.
Particles
The 40 particles are a sample that shows how molecules move, not the real number of molecules. Their velocities follow a 2D Maxwell distribution scaled so that the mean square speed is proportional to the absolute temperature. Changing the temperature multiplies every velocity by \sqrt{\frac{T_\mathrm{new}}{T_\mathrm{old}}}; changing the volume stretches the heights of the particles in proportion. Particles do not collide with each other (ideal gas) and bounce elastically off the walls and piston. Real molecules move at hundreds of metres per second; the screen shows them very slowly. The pressure readout comes from the ideal gas law, not from counting collisions.
Controls
Choosing an experiment starts it from its default values and clears the records. Change the controlled and manipulated variables with the slider or the value field. The manipulated variable also follows when you drag the present-state dot along the graph, in Boyle’s experiment you can drag the piston handle up and down, and in Charles’s and Gay-Lussac’s experiments you can drag the red column of the thermometer (its grip) up and down; tapping the thermometer jumps to that reading. The dependent variable cannot be set directly.
Record present state stores the present T, V and P as one column of the table and one numbered dot on the graph. Measure 5 points sets the manipulated variable to both ends of its range and three values in between, records each, and returns to the original value. Up to 12 records are kept. Clear records in the transport bar removes only the records; Reset all restores every value and tool. Play/pause and speed affect only the motion of the particles.
Range of the model
At low temperature or high pressure, forces between molecules and their size make a real gas depart from the ideal gas and finally condense into a liquid. The temperature is therefore limited to 200\text{–}500\,\mathrm{K}, and the dotted parts of the graph only show the law extended, not what a real gas would do. Readouts are rounded to 0.01 for pressure and volume and to 1\,\mathrm{K} for temperature; the constant values are computed before rounding.
